MILWAUKEE — Before getting in the water, Justin Lacey and the rest of his lifeguard training class are learning different carry techniques.

What You Need To Know

  • In 2021, Milwaukee County only had 135 lifeguards. The ideal number is 200

  • Eight of the county pools were closed, and beaches went without lifeguards

  • The county raised the pay to start at more $15 an hour for new lifeguards, and can go up to $30 depending on experience

As a 16-year-old, he has never lifeguarded before, so learning these techniques on how to save someone who is struggling in the water is crucial.

The training class he's in at the Pulaski Pool is part of Milwaukee County’s free, 12-hour in-water training to help potential lifeguards pass the physical performance exam.

“It’s really useful; I’m able to use the pool for free while I’m doing the training, which is really beneficial for me, and I’m going to use skills that I haven’t done before," Lacey said.

He’s one of roughly 20 potential new lifeguards who have taken advantage of the in-water training session this April.

Jason Helstowski, a former high school swimmer and former Marine, said there were a few reasons why he decided to take the plunge this year and try something new.

“Trying to fulfill lifeguard roles so facilities can stay open, implement my abilities that I had as a competitive swimmer, and make some money," Helstowski said.

In 2021, only four of Milwaukee County’s public pools were open. The beaches went without lifeguards.

The county doesn’t want that to happen again, so it is doing everything it can to recruit and keep lifeguards.

They’ve raised the pay this year by $3 an hour, meaning lifeguards can start at around $15 an hour, and earn nearly $30 depending on experience.

There’s been a lot of interest — and the county might add another in-water training session before the summer.

Lacey said if someone is interested, they should give it a shot.

“There’s no harm in trying it. If it’s not a fit for you, you don’t need to do it," Lacey said. "They’re really kind here, and it’s going to be really fun if you do do it.”
