VIOLA, Wis. — In the driftless region of Southeastern Wisconsin sits Kickapoo High School. The school only has a total enrollment of about 160 students, which could be a negative for some, but not Alayna Culver.
“I love being in a small school because you have such a sense of community,” said Culver. “You know everyone. Everyone laughs with each other and goes to different events with each other. We all just have a great time.”
Culver’s favorite subjects are math and English. She’s gotten to know her math teacher pretty well.
“What’s cool now is that I have her as a student in stats, but she’s also a teacher assistant for me in one of my geometry classes,” said Kickapoo Math Teacher, Megan Schullo.
Shullo has a side-gig at Walnut Burger in Viola. When they wanted to hire a trustworthy high schooler, Shullo vouched for Culver.
“So, I am her teacher. I am her coworker. She is my TA. That’s Kickapoo though. You’re in it, and you’re in it hard,” laughed Schullo.
Culver plays volleyball, softball, and basketball. Her coaches appreciate her leadership skills.
“In her family, she’s the oldest. She takes that role on as the person who takes care of the younger kids. She brings that to the basketball team and the school in general,” said Kickapoo Girl's Basketball Coach, Eric Wiegel.
It’s something she takes pride in.
“I love being the leader and helping other people and picking other people,” said Culver.
Culver also belongs to the student council and ran Kickapoo’s homecoming activities. Additionally, she volunteered to clean up the aftermath of the 2018 Kickapoo River flood.
She’s also been involved with 4-H since the 3rd grade, including terms as President, Vice-President, and Secretary.
“4-H has played a huge role in my life. I’ve competed in multiple fairs, and I learned how to sew clothing and quilts,” said Culver.
She’s undecided on her college and major for next year. One possibility she’s pondering is becoming an elementary school math teacher.
“She cares about not just academics. She cares about being a good person, working hard, helping others. She would be perfect,” said Shullo.
Whatever Culver decides, those close to her expect a bright future.
