Safety first is the rule that he not only practices but he preaches.

"You're not in a bubble," Gratz said. "You can be a great driver and you have to be watching out for what other students are what other drivers are doing."

With more than 30 years of driving experience, "Trucker Dave" has had a front-row seat to Wisconsin's roadways.

"You're responsible for everyone in the car with you and everyone you meet on the road," he said.

Gratz has seen more than he'd like to admit and has experienced his fair share of what not to do.

"People reading a newspaper, the newspapers spread out across the steering wheel," he said. "I will see people eating, shaving, women putting mascara on. That's all in addition to drivers texting and being on their cell phones."

"With more and more things happening on the road, it makes it difficult to drive, especially for today's young drivers," he said.

So, preparing those young drivers for the challenges on the road is why he and his wife Marsha opened the Oregon Area Driving School.

"Our kids are grown and out of the house and we love kids, so we enjoy working with them and want to keep them safe," Marcia said.
