Among them was Jack Henry, a sophomore at Sturgeon Bay High School.

Henry not only helped fill the boxes for Adopt a Soldier-Door County, but delivered several bins of donated goods he collected at a pair of Sturgeon Bay schools.

“(The troops) don’t have all the stuff we do back home and they need something to keep them going,” said Henry, who has a history of military service in his family. ”It’s very important for them, and us, to keep helping them.”

Nancy Hutchinson is the director of the 15-year-old program. The organization has shipped more than 10,000 packages in that time to people from Door and Kewaunee counties serving all over the globe.

The boxes are filled largely with items — everything from bags of chips to personal care items and letters of thanks from people back home — donated by the community at drop off sites around the county.

“For me, it’s a feeling of satisfaction that we were able to help somebody,” Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson added that she hears back, and keeps in touch, with many of the troops the organization supports.

“I’m very touched by the letters, because I don’t expect anything from them. I don’t expect anything in return,” she said while about a dozen volunteers filled the boxes at Door Bible Baptist Church near Brussels, Wis.

Henry was glad to lend a hand to the effort and grateful for the support of his classmates who offered their donations.

“It feels great,” he said. “I honestly feel so good about doing this, and I love supporting our troops because they do so much for us.
