MILWAUKEE— This month, Wisconsinites can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the movies.

What You Need To Know

  • Hispanic Heritage Month is dedicated to elevating and honoring the work of Latinx traditions

  • Some screenings will include food and music

  • Fifteen films will be featured, five of them will have in-person screenings

Cine Sin Fronteras, which translates to Cinema Without Borders, is hosting a month-long celebration of Hispanic culture.

"A great way to get familiar with a culture is through food and music," Cine Sin Fronteras programmer, Ernie Quiroz, said.

Events will not only highlight food and music, but also film.

The nonprofit will feature 15 films over the course of a month. Five of them will be shown at the Oriental theater, while the remaining 10 will have virtual screenings.

"I sort of view those virtual offerings as sort of a diving deeper into some of the issues," Quiroz said.

Quiroz shared a quote by the late film critic Roger Ebert, who called film an "empathy engine—" in other words a way for us to experience life through another person's shoes. Quiroz said this is how he always views film.  That's exactly what he hopes people will get to experience during Hispanic Heritage Month.

"It's a chance to see what it's like in other parts of the world," he said.

The celebration of the Latinx experience runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
