KENOSHA, Wis. — Monday, Aug. 23, marks one year since Jacob Blake was shot by Kenosha police offer Rusten Sheskey. The incident which was caught on camera and sparked unrest in the city last summer.
Nearly a year later, family and friends came together for a peaceful rally.
“My family is most humbled and thankful for all the blessings and prayers we received over this year,” said Blakes father, Jacob Blake Sr.
Blake Sr. was one of many to speak at the rally. Members of the Blake family, along with members of Breonna Taylor’s family and other community members, were present, saying they need to stick together.
“I would like to see justice for all, not for some,” said Blake Sr.
The rally focused on unity and justice for Blake, but many were still calling for Sheskey to be fired.
“A year later, we are still highly focused on the ball and that the goal is getting justice for Jacob Blake,” said Blake’s uncle, Justin Blake.
People at the rally said they will continue to work toward change, and one day hope to create a trust between the people and the police.
“It's important to talk about it but we also have to show up,” said community activist Porche Bennett. “If we don't show it they'll never believe what we are saying. We can say anything, but we have to show them what unity and solidarity looks like.”
In January, the Kenosha County district attorney declined to file charges against Shesky in the shooting, who returned to duty in March. The Kenosha police chief said at that time that Sheskey was found to have been acting within policy and was not disciplined.
