WISCONSIN— The threat for severe weather Wednesday may have many Wisconsinites double checking their safety preparedness plan. There are many things you can do to prepare for severe weather like equipping yourself with the proper tools.

A weather radio may be a good tool to start off with.

“It’s a very reliable source because once the power goes out, you might lose battery on your phone, or the cell towers might not give you the service that you’re used to,” said Spectrum News 1 meteorologist Brooke Brighton. “With this, you’re always going to get alerts throughout the rest of the night.”

You can find a weather radio at any big box store.

David Maack of Racine County Office of Emergency Management said it may be a good idea to have that weather radio, as well as other apps on your phone, and any other reliable means of getting forecast details.

“I call it having no single point of failure, but building redundancy into your warning system so that if something happens, you’re aware of it,” said Maack.

He also said to find a safe space in your home when there are severe weather threats. Having a plan in place and enough time to prepare can be crucial.

“The safest place is in the basement,” said Maack. “Stay away from windows, and if you don’t have a basement, go into an interior room, hallway or closet, until the warning expires.”

The top things to remember are to stay alert, seek shelter, stay indoors when necessary and keep calm.
