MILWAUKEE — Michael Lovell, president of Marquette University, took to Twitter to announce that he has tested positive for COVID-19 Tuesday night.

Lovell, who is fully vaccinated against coronavirus, said he was feeling mild symptoms of the disease.

“After experiencing mild cold-like symptoms, I took the responsible step of getting a COVID-19 test, and although I am fully vaccinated, the results came back positive this afternoon,” Lovell said.

Lovell will quarantine for the next 10 days, though he is no longer experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.

“My family and I are grateful for the vaccine I received this spring,” he wrote. “Had I not been vaccinated, the outcome could have been very different.”

Lovell stressed the importance of vaccinating all students this fall.

“That is why we are requiring that students be vaccinated for this fall and urging all members of the Marquette community to get vaccinated,” he wrote. “The vaccines are remarkably effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death.”

Lovell has been president of Marquette University since 2014; the university is requiring all students to be vaccinated to return to class this fall.
