GLENDALE, Wis. — Girl Scouts in Glendale have been busy gardening at Parkway Elementary School.
The Brownies have spent the last few months restoring an old garden at the elementary school.
“These garden beds have been here for a number of years and had been neglected. Now the Brownies are helping to bring new life to these gardens,” said Traci Niss, a Brownie Leader with Troop 1182.
Once the produce grows the Girl Scouts will be donating it to a new food pantry in the Glendale community. Those with the pantry said they will be providing the produce to kids in need in the community and the goal is to have the pantry up and running when the produce is ready. The food will help hungry students in the Glendale-River Hills school district.
The garden is not only helping to give back to the community, but it is also teaching these Brownies several lessons in life from how to grow food to hard work and responsibility. The garden will produce fruits and vegetables.
“When the girls came to me and said, 'Hey, can we grow produce in the community garden at Parkway Elementary?' I was just so excited," Carla Pennington-Cross, Glendale-River Hills School District Foundation president said. "It is a perfect illustration of how the little person can give and share of everything they have because you just start with this little seed stick in the dirt and in a few months you’ve grown food that you can share in your community."
