MILWAUKEE — A new 10,000 square-foot mural is going up in downtown Milwaukee, as a way to celebrate Schlitz Park and the city.

The Downtown Placemaking Task Force and Schlitz Park selected 38-year-old artist Greg Gossel to paint the new mural on the south-facing façade of the former Schlitz Brewery powerhouse. It is the group’s largest mural to date and measures 80 feet high by 120 feet wide.

This will be Gossel’s third Milwaukee mural with previous installations outside the nearby Fiserv Forum and in the Deer District. The mural incorporates all things Milwaukee, like the park itself, the city’s brewing history, and the Milwaukee’s present energy.

“The motorcycle rider is kind of my favorite piece,” says Gossel. “The rider is looking off into the distance, it feels powerful, it feels hopeful, and it feels exciting.”

Being a part of a project of this magnitude has been a long time goal of his.

“Not sure what i would do if i didn’t have the ability to express myself artistically,” says Gossel.

He was selected by the Downtown Placemaking Task Force out of about 50 other local artists.

The task force says they picked him because of his energy and commitment to showcasing Schlitz Park.

The mural is one of several key redevelopments underway at Schlitz Park including renovations to interior lobbies, common areas and amenities, renewed activation along the Milwaukee River, and a new pedestrian plaza connecting buildings at the heart of campus.

Schlitz Park plans to hold a series of monthly outdoor and riverfront events, as well as a social media campaign, to inspire and engage area kids and the community to share their visions of the city, with the hashtag #MilwaukeeFamous.
