GLENDALE, Wis.— At Heartis Village North Shore, an assisted living and memory care facility in Glendale, seniors colored their way through the pandemic.
"Getting a new coloring sheet every day gave them a purpose to get out of bed on days they were quarentined in their apartments," says Katharyne Darm, senior activities assistant. "Getting a new coloring sheet every day gave them a purpose to get out of bed on days they were quarentined in their apartments," says Katharyne Darm, senior activities assistant.
And once they get up, Darm spends hours getting to know them as they added a little bit of color to the paper, and to her life.
"I love being able to just come in and just spend time with these people that have such amazing interesting lives," says Darm.
Like the elderly residents she serves, Darm is also part of a vulnerable population.
"Technically I have special needs. I feel like it's even more important to make it known that people like us are not limited to what people see. We can offer so much more to this world," she says.
Darm offers more than many would expect. She says she's serving a high calling by working with seniors in need of memory care.
Adding color into the world is not only helping seniors keep their minds sharp, and their walls full of hope; it's providing a brighter outlook for the future.
