ALTOONA, Wis.— A growing Canadian sport, known as crokicurl, has made its way to the United States via Altoona, Wisconsin.

Mike Golat, the city administrator for the City of Altoona, said that Altoona is home to the first crokicurl rink in the United States.

The game combines curling with crokinole, a Canadian board game. It's a relatively new winter sport but it's starting to spread across the continent.

"This is a perfect game for the winter to get people outside and moving. Plus, I'm a curler so it combines one of my favorite games with something you can do outside," Golat said.

Golat said that being the first place in the U.S. with an official rink is setting his city up for success in the sport.

"The advent of crokicurl here in Altoona and establishing the first U.S. National Championship, we wanted to kind of plant the flag as the epicenter of the Crokicurl universe in the United States," said Golat.
