WAUKESHA, Wis. — One thousand people received their first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday, the Waukesha County Expo Center’s first full day as a community vaccination clinic.

“Moments like this, where we take a huge step forward and we have this milestone of running these mass clinics, really reinvigorates our staff,” Waukesha County Health Officer Benjamen Jones said.

Those vaccinated Wednesday represented all eligible groups as defined by the state health department. The community clinic is not open to the public; residents must subscribe to the county’s vaccination newsletter in order to be contacted to schedule an appointment.

Waukesha County has more than 70 approved vaccinators, but the Expo Center’s space and staff size offers the most accessible setting.

Still, vaccine supply remains a problem statewide. Waukesha County requested 7,000 doses for the first week of its community clinic, but received just 1,000.

“It’s kind of frustrating at times,” Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow said. “We wish there were more vaccines. I think the state’s trying to do a good job trying to balance across the state, not just by region, It’s a challenge.”

The county plans to expand the community clinic’s vaccination capacity to provide up to 10,000 shots per week once supply increases.
