RACINE COUNTY (SPECTRUM NEWS) — What started as a calling to help people mask up in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic has now grown into something much bigger.

“I knew we had a sewing machine in our closet and I knew I had to do something, so that is how it started,” Alexandra Laxmi Iyer said.

To date, she has sent out more than 2,000 free masks to strangers across the U.S. She’s helping families in need mask up in Racine and Kenosha counties.

Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Racine and Kenosha Counties Sonya Thomas expressed her gratitude for Laxmi Iyer’s work.

“Within a week she sent 60 masks. They have designs on them for kids like sports and ladybug patterns,” Thomas said.

Laxmi Iyer lives in Michigan, but is able to connect with people needing masks across the country through the power of social media.
