OSHKOSH, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- With schools closed and our most vulnerable citizens encouraged to isolate, accessing meals has become more difficult. In Oshkosh, some businesses have stepped up like superheroes, to help feed families.

Jon Doemel, owner of ZaRonis restaurant sees helping out the people of Oshkosh as his duty.

“Well we’re a super hero themed restaurant so you can’t be a super hero themed restaurant if you’re not trying to save the city,” said Doemel.

His crew has been delivering a weeks worth of food to people who can't leave their home, for free.

“We wanted to have that supplied for them so we could just drop off at the door so they wouldn’t have to go out anywhere," said Doemel.

Superhero comics and coloring books could also be added to orders.

“We got some new ones in today from our friends at Jake’s Diapers, they got a big donation," said Doemel.

Another Oshkosh business, Planet Perk, stepped up to provide meals for children. They are making deliveries of breakfast and lunch. Their goal is to reach families that can't make it to school provided drop-off points.

“Probably the most human thing you can do in a crisis or at any time for that matter is feed a fellow human being," said Kenneth Osmond, owner of Planet Perk.

They've seen a spike in needs this past week, averaging around 250 meals per day. Much of the food and staff is provided by Planet Perk. They've seen community contributions as well.

“We’re providing the mechanism for everybody to rally around this and do something for somebody else," said Osmond.

No contribution is considered too small. One man who was down on his luck, contributed $1.53.

“He said, everyone’s gotta chip in, right? As he was walking away, I said, hey is there anything I can do for you? He just said, you just did it,” said Osmond.

Once that story got out, an anonymous doner left $153. He also left a note.

“Because the man who gave you his last dollar and fifty three cents inspired me, because of the good you do, because I received reduced lunch and was made fun of, because my dad taught me the true nature of giving is anonymous, because I’m able to," read Osmond.

More heroes can be found on the Heroes of Oshkosh Facebook page. Food, diapers, and baby formula are popular items. People can also find help with their grocery shopping needs.

“People start to say, oh this is something I take for granted or something I never thought would be useful and find a way to contribute and help their neighbors out,” said Adam Bellcorelli of Heroes of Oshkosh.

“We really have some amazing people here in Oshkosh that are really coming together and working it out behind the scenes and communicating, and our non-profits are communicating to help each other out. It’s pretty amazing,” added Jon Doemel.
