MILWAUKEE (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- Vietnam Veteran Dennis Schwab comes to the Wilson Senior Center every day the woodshop is open. “I come here every day. This is a God-given gift,” says Schwab.

Schwab, a two-time cancer survivor was exposed to agent orange, known for its use by the U.S. military as part of its chemical warfare program during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1971.

"My doctor told me as soon as I got done with my chemotherapy and radiation to get back here as soon as possible. It’s the best place for me physically and mentally," says Schwab.

Many seniors utilize the woodshop to pursue their hobby, while also reaping the rewards of its additional health benefits.

“Keeps your brain moving otherwise you forget basic stuff. This helps you with your planning, how to get it done,” said Dr. Deborah Luetzow, M.D.

Luetzow, 63, also utilizes the workshop. She says a former patient told her about the woodshop and now she enjoys the opportunity to make things and be creative.

“Wonderful, wonderful projects…There is a lot of talent in this room and it's great because we all learn and grow from one another,” Luetzow says.
