MILWAUKEE (SPECTRUM NEWS) - Democratic National Convention leaders joined Mayor Tom Barrett and Chief Alfonso Morales to deliver updates about the security plan for the DNC in July.
While the official security perimeter will not be finalized until spring, Friday DNC leadership announced a “security footprint” in downtown Milwaukee.
The boundaries for this downtown footprint expand from Fiserv Forum north to Cherry Street, east to Water Street, soutn to Clybourn Street and west to 10th Street. Barrett said at Friday’s news conference DNC security will not force any area businesses to close its doors during the convention. He also said the city will accomodate downtown residents and businesses as much as possible.
“We are a city. That means that we’ll be in full operation at the same time as the convention,” Barrett said. “So I’m advocating to make sure any security measures are reasonable for the people who live and work here.”
DNC and law enforcement leaders will host “community conversations” to answer security questions leading up to the convention. They will meet for the first time with downtown residents and businesses the last week of February.
