RINGLE, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- A man wanted since 2016 on child sexual assault charges has been arrested in Marathon County afterliving in a bunker for the past three years, according to the Marathon County's Sheriff's Department.
Jeremiah Button has active warrants for first-degree child sexual assault, repeated sexual assault of same child, possession of child pornography and incest with a child, according to Wisconsin court records. He was released on a $25,000 bond. Button disappeared two weeks before he was due in court in Portage County in April 2016.
Three years later, a hunter stumbled on Button's bunker on Aug. 9 and notified police. The small bunker was packed full with stuff. After a 20 minute standoff, Marathon County police officers arrested Button.
Deputies said all of the items inside of his bunker, including the food he ate, came from a nearby landfill.
"The structure he built was about a half mile from our landfill. He had an old bicycle that he found that he could pedal the bike and recharge his batteries," said Jeffrey Stefonek, a detective at the Marathon County Sheriff's Office.
After the lack of human interaction for three years, police said Button was more than willing to talk to them.
Button is being held with $100,000 bond and will have his pretrial on Sept. 16. The Department of Natural Resources has control of the bunker and will dispose of it.
