WAUWATOSA, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- A mission organization in the Milwaukee area is taking a unique approach to helping refugees, a project which also helps the environment. Why Not Now Missions is putting women from the Congo to work by making baskets out of recycled plastic bags. So far they have saved more than 30,000 bags from ending up in landfills. The women who make the baskets are able to keep all of the profits from what they sell.

Saturday, the group sold their baskets at the Wauwatosa Farmer's Market.

“They crotchet them into various mats, baskets," said mission founder Shannon Robak. "We help get them into markets and craft fairs and help to sell them, and then all the proceeds go to whoever makes the item, so every single penny goes right back to the woman.”

So far, the women have been able to raise more than $10,000 by selling the baskets. They plan to have more dates at the market next month.
