RACINE, Wis. - Hundreds of police officers have paid their final respects to a Racine officer who was fatally shot while trying to stop an armed robbery.

Police on motorcycles led a procession for Officer John Hetland after his funeral Wednesday at Carthage College in Kenosha. The Kenosha News reports bagpipers played as hundreds of officers from various agencies and members of the public lined up to honor Hetland.

A group of six Racine Police officers carried out Hetland's casket, draped in an American flag, as other officers saluted.

Hetland was off-duty when he was fatally shot on June 17 when he tried to intervene in an armed robbery at Teezers Bar and Grill. Authorities say Hetland jumped over the bar and confronted a masked, armed man when he was shot.
