A difficult day for the Milwaukee Police Department as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

Here is what we know so far: The officer killed was 35-years-old and was a 17-year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department.

At this time his identity is not being revealed, as some members of his family are yet to be notified.

Assistant Police Chief Michael Brunson says the shooting occurred after members of the Milwaukee Police Tactical Enforcement Unit were conducting a search warrant at about 9:20 Wednesday morning.

Officers made contact with two subjects when shots were fired, striking one of the officers.

He was taken to Froedtert Hospital but did not survive.

The suspect is a 26-year-old Milwaukee man. Police are not releasing this suspect's name at this time.

It is not clear what the search warrant was relating to.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was at the press conference and says the loss is being felt by the entire city.

"He was doing his job. He was working to make our city safer and he died. He died because an individual decided that rather than let the police do their work lawfully, that he would kill this police officer."

Police describe this as a fluid investigation, and say more information will be released at a later time.

We of course will continue to follow any developments.
