MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin’s tree farmers have been busy, as more people buy real trees this year.

Nearly every time you drive by Tree City, it looks packed. It’s set up in the parking lot of Vitense Golfland, on Madison’s west side.

Owner Wade Comstock brings trees from his farm in Black River Falls. “We’ve probably got about 4-500 here on site right now,” he said.

It seems to be a pretty good crop, nearly every tree is full and tall.

Families wander the parking lot, trying to find their perfect tree. One little girl started jumping up and down when she and her dad found their pick.

As so many businesses struggle, some of Wisconsin’s Christmas tree farmers are having a good season. That’s in large part because more people are buying real trees this year.

“A lot of people since they’re home more, they want to get their tree early,” Comstock said. “That way they can have it up for the whole season."

As many work from home, and aren’t going anywhere for the holidays, they’re home to enjoy their tree more than they would be in a normal year.

A survey from the Christmas Tree Board shows 21% of people who had a fake tree in 2019 are getting a real one this year.

“We’ve had quite a few new customers that have bought a tree and a tree stand, because it’s their first time [with a real tree],” Comstock said.

It’s a welcome sight for Comstock, as people try to enjoy this unusual holiday season as much as they can.

“It’s just nice to know that we're providing a product for people that’ll very likely make them happy for the next few weeks,” he said. “Especially in a year like this.”
