MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- Donut Squad is quickly becoming Milwaukee's donut authority, according to loyal customers.
It's not unusual to see empty shelves when walking into either of their shops in the morning.
“As soon as we open up it gets really busy and then we open up until one in the afternoon or until we’re sold out, so usually people that come earlier in the morning see more selection," said Moe Dakwar co-owner of Donut Squad.
Their unique selection of donuts draws crowds from all over the Milwaukee metro area. "I make the drive like I said, it's awesome, that they have one in Waukesha so I don't have to drive here for the donuts, but anytime I want a donut, donut squad is at the top of my list," said customer Sammy Smith.
Donut Squad has gained a cult following since they opened less than three years ago.
“Donut squad is by far the best donuts I’ve had in my entire life," added Donut Squad customer Nicholas Kleiber.
Customers that can't get enough of their creations which include toppings such as Kit Kat bars, Oreos, strawberry shortcake flavor and peanut butter cups. Convinced that there is no other like it in town.
“The consistency of the dough is very airy and it’s hard to find that good dough consistency so this is the best place", continued Kleiber.
When Donut Squad opened in June 2017, owners Moe Dakwar and Bobby Kaid never thought their donut business would become so successful this fast, they initially thought it would make a good side business.
"It's really exciting to know that you've done it on your own at a young age," Dakwar.
The UW Milwaukee grads combined their knowledge in business and marketing to make their business take off, using social media as an extra tool to connect with the donut squad and reach new markets.
"We do a lot of events we do a lot of catering we’ve done about 15 to 20 weddings in the last months or so, a lot of people have the donut walls and I feel like for weddings that’s the new thing instead of cakes", shared Dakwar.
The 25-year-old founders of Donut Squad plan to expand to other cities in southeast Wisconsin and even across the state border in the future.
