MILWAUKEE — The City of Milwaukee wants to send a message to Madison as the city's Common Council voted to push lawmakers to repeal the state's abortion ban.

Lobbyists for the City of Milwaukee can now lobby lawmakers in the Wisconsin Legislature to repeal the state's abortion ban from 1849 after the Common Council voted 10-1, with two members excused, in favor of an abortion rights resolution Tuesday morning.

The lone “no” vote was cast by Alder Borkowski.

This measure is largely symbolic. Basically, it makes the city's stance clear.

Milwaukee is committed to abortion care, the city supports repealing the state's 173-year-old ban, and lobbyists representing the city are now allowed to push for that repeal.

Republican leaders who control the legislature are opposed to rolling back the ban and have already adjourned for this legislative session, which means they won't be back on the floor until January.

Though lawmakers could always come back, the odds of that are extremely slim, especially after Republican Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke announced this week that he would be step down earlier than expected.
