CINCINNATI — The City of Cincinnati said they are continuing to prepare for even more rain and expected flooding as more showers and thunderstorms are expected in the area.
They say in a press release that the heaviest rain is predicted for tonight and that the city’s Emergency Operations Center will open for the week on Sunday morning.
“Residents are reminded to exercise caution while driving and to respect road closures when in place,” the release reads. “If you come across high water on a road, turn around. Do not drive through flood waters.”
Today, the city said they are focused on the following:
- “Assessing road closures and needs for additional closures
- Pulling traffic signal controllers at intersections that will be underwater
- Filling sandbags and installing flood gates
- Collaborating between departments to utilize all resources in flood response
- Monitoring river levels and rainfall through close contact with the National Weather Service”
The following roads are closed, and the city said more could be added depending on river levels:
- Kellog Avenue, between Wilmer and Apple Hill
- Mehring Way, from Freeman to US50 entrance ramp
- Mehring Way, between Gest and East Pete Rose Way will be closed on Sunday
Riverfront parks and California Woods are closed tonight and this weekend.
“While we understand the desire to observe and document this flooding, please stay out of the area for your own safety,” the release reads. “The area south of Mehring from Central Avenue to the Boathouse will be filled with debris, potentially unsafe water quality, and fast-moving floodwaters. In addition, lighting fixtures have been removed from the area, lowering visibility at night.”
The Greater Cincinnati Water Works’ Stormwater Management Utility installed a flood gate at the western side of Mehring Way Saturday, according to the city. A flood gate was installed on Carr Street on Wednesday.
The city says forecasts predict the Ohio River will get to 60 feet by Sunday. Flood operations at the Mill Creek Barrier Dam were activated on Friday.
