MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers open their season Thursday in New York against the New York Yankees. The Brewers never get much national respect, but they’ve found a way to win the National League Central Division the last two years and three of the last four.
Here are three things to watch for during the Brewers season:
Chourio's next step
What does ascending star Jackson Chourio have in store for Brewers fans in his second season?
The outfielder just turned 21-years-old during Spring Training.
Chourio had more than 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases last season, becoming the youngest player to have a so-called “20-20” season in Major League history.
He also was clutch. Chourio hit .455 with two home runs in the playoff series against the New York Mets.
Murphy's encore
It will be fascinating to watch Brewers manager Pat Murphy this season. He was the National League Manager of the Year in his first year on the job.
He was promoted to replace his friend Craig Counsell, who left for the rival Chicago Cubs.
Murphy seems to have a unique knack for having the pulse of his team.
Contreras blossoms
Catcher William Contreras has now established himself as a great talent. The 27-year-old National League Silver Slugger Award winner hit .281 with 23 home runs and 92 runs batted in last season. He always seemed to come up with the big hit when needed.
He also had a terrific way of working with the Brewers' pitching staff. It will be fun to see how Contreras keeps growing this season.
