APPLETON, Wis. — Axe throwing is a growing sport in Wisconsin and across the United States.
Part of why it’s becoming popular is due to its uniqueness. It’s also a pastime that can also be done away from the elements in winter.
Appleton Axe opened in 2019. Partner and operator Kyle Van Able said this activity is fun for everyone ages 12 and up.
“It’s kind of primitive… axe throwing is a bit primitive and so I guess that’s the big draw out of that,” said Van Abel. “Like let’s go throw sharp things out at a board and a board that has really cool games.”
Safety is a big concern for the company, which is why there are strict rules and a training session that occurs before anyone throws. The boards are also replaced and watered down to prevent splintering.
Appleton Axe recently made the addition of projection targets and games, which adds to the experience.
“It’s also one of those things that there’s a lot of skill behind it, but you can kind of start off right away. It’s amazing,” said customer Matthew Ridley. “You’re throwing an axe and hitting a target.”
Games that Appleton Axe offers include Standard Targets, Zombie/Duck Shooter, Tic Tac Toe, Line up 4, Twenty-One, Cricket, Battleship and many others.
The sport of axe throwing is especially growing in the area, with the World Axe Throwing and U.S. Pro-Am Championships being held in Appleton in recent years past.
