MARSHFIELD, Wis. — Wildwood Park and Zoo announced on Friday it has a new addition: a Peregrine falcon named Amelia.

The 9-year-old falcon, brought to the zoo on Sept. 27, was injured in the wild and determined to be non-releasable due to the extent of her injuries. The zoo said she had been hit by a car, and her left wing needed to be amputated in order to save her life.

She has been living at Wild Instincts, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Rhinelander, since 2013 to let her injury heal.

The zoo said Amelia's name is fitting for her species. "Peregrine" means to wander, and the falcon is named after Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was a true pioneer in aviation.

Amelia is a welcomed addition after the zoo's other Peregrine falcon, Tuck, had to be euthanized in May. Tuck came to the zoo in 2011, but officials deemed his condition had been deteriorating rapidly, giving him a poor quality of life.

With Amelia at the zoo, officials said they believe she will help teach visitors about her species, just as she did at Wild Instincts.
