MADISON, Wis.— If you thought Betty White's legacy on the small screen would be everlasting in the wake of her death, wait until you hear about her legacy at animal shelters across Wisconsin and the rest of the country. TO help to mark what would have been her 100th birthday this week, people all over the country are tackling the Betty White Challenge.

"It came to light a lot especially in the weeks after her passing that she was just a huge animal advocate working with animal shelters [and] zoos," Lisa Bernard, the public relations coordinator for the Dane County Humane Society, said.

At the Dane County Humane Society alone, roughly 800 donations have been made online in Betty White's name; those donations total in at nearly $25,000. The humane society hasn't even started to count donations people had mailed in or dropped off in person.

It's been a similar story at other humane society locations statewide; the Wisconsin Human Society brought in $60,000; the Oshkosh Area Humane Society raised $15,000 and counting; the Eau Claire County Humane Association's raised more than $12,000, along with various gifts of pet food and toys; donations to the Coulee Region Humane Society in Onalaska had topped $10,000 through Tuesday.

"We thank them so much for their generosity and reaching out and donating in her honor," Bernard said. "We think she would be so proud of everybody."
