MILWAUKEE (SPECTRUM NEWS) — On Friday, Carmen Middle and High School of Science and Technology: Northwest Campus hosted a youth celebration aimed at  elevating our future.

“It’s a good way to bring the community together especially with all the things happening right now. All the police brutality. Everyone gets to come together as a community,” says student Alex Presswood.

The family friendly event aimed to educate, empower and uplift Milwaukee's youth.

“I decided to throw a Juneteeth Expo and Rally for the youth here at Carmen Northwest  because i wanted a safe place for the kids to gather after being in quarantine for so long. I wanted them to come out and be safe,” says Tameika Lawrence.

It was also a day to uplift and promote Black empowerment while also providing entertainment, vendors, giveaways and free food.

“I wanted them to know that we do see them and we do feel them and we want them to be able to express themselves with the injustice that is going on.They are the ones that can make a difference. We want them to voice their opinions…tell us what they need from us for them to be the change that we need in the world,“  says Lawrence.

Change that doesn’t just preach equality but actually practices it.
