GREEN BAY, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) - Many didn't know him personally but when the call went out in Green Bay Friday to be there for the funeral service of a U.S. Army veteran without close friends or family, dozens of people showed up at Nicolet Memorial Park.

Army Veteran Jonathan Whitt, 31, had served his country at Fort Riley, Kansas in the U.S. Army from 2005 to 2007.

"Jonathan lived in Green Bay. Didn't have any immediate family in the area. Many of his family members are passed away and he was kinda disconnected from family," said Brown County Veterans Services Director Joe Oulik.

Jonathan was struggling with mental health issues like so many other veterans. He died by suicide on September 5th.

"You see a lot of suffring from time in service because it does things to you mentally and physically and sometimes those things become insurmountable," explained Oulik.

Brown County Veterans Services tell us they don't have any pictures of Jonathan.

"He had a really rough life growing up from what we can tell by just looking through the history of him, and he joined the service and he got hurt in the service, and had to leave service early. And, we can only speculate, but when he went into the service that was like his new family. And, then he go hurt and he lost that family again and he had a lot of loss in his life. And, I think all of that piling on top of him. It was just too much for him," explained Brown County Veterans Service Matthew Franklin.

Veterans have resources they can turn to when they are struggling.

"It's about brining awareness of the benefits that are available. The VA does not advertise on TV or radio, and so if we make it ok to seek those benefits and to seek that help, than more veterans will seek that," said Oulik.
