CHILTON, Wi. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- 50 years ago the 1969 Chilton Tigers high school football team's season was simply extraordinary.
"That year we were un-scored upon, that of course means we were unbeaten, untied, and unscored upon. And we scored 363 points to zero in 8 games," explained 1969 Tiger reunion coordinator Mike Schmidlkofer.
Mike Schmidlkofer was junior that season.
"I was a second string offensive player. Our team was so good that I got to play a lot, and we had a team that was just dedicated, disciplined, respected our coaches, and were good athletes," said Schmidlkofer.
It's clear he's passionate about preserving memories of the team.
"My son probably about twenty something years ago, he was four or five years ago, and he says dad you know if the other team doesn't score you can't lose. And, I said to him you're right and let me tell you about the 1969 Chilton Tigers," laughed Schmidlkofer.
Fast forward twenty years and Schmidlkofer's son is a defensive coach on a high school team.
"He works with the defensive coordinator to try to get the other team, not to score."
The most recognized nome on the 1969 Tiger's roster is David Casper who went on to play college football for Notre Dame University and spend eleven years in the NFL as one of the most highly regarded tight ends to ever play.
"Mostly what I got out of here was a good time and a lot of fun guys. And, I always told people, what's it like to play football. And, I said you play high school football. And, they say yeah, and I say it isn't any different. You're in a fight with a guy on the other side. You're playing with teammates, you're playing hard. It was just a special deal that we never got scored on, but still it was just fun football," said Casper.
The NFL Hall of Famer says one of his fondest memories are of when the final whistle blew, the nervousness subsided, and his teammates walked of the field together as buddies.
"I'm looking forward to seeing my friends. We're gonna have a bunch of guys here you don't have the opportunity of seeing all at once, so you come back and see your buddies," said Casper.
And, reliving the glory days and celebrating the deep bonds formed that season is what the reunion weekend is all about.
