MADISON, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) - A Madison family has transformed their driveway into a dance party.
Dave Fujara lives in the Cherokee neighborhood, near the Dane County Airport. Just like everybody, he’s been stuck mostly at home.
Every day as he works from home, he sees a lot of people walk by. “We have a ton of walkers in our neighborhood. The neighborhood’s about a two-mile loop,” Fujara said. “Folks that normally work from home get out a couple times during the day and walk. A lot of seniors and families with kids home right now that need to get out of the house,” he laughed.
That’s when he had an idea: a dance-off in the driveway. He had bought a security camera after there were a couple break-ins down the street. In chalk, he drew an X right where the security camera had a great view. Then he added a message saying “show off your dance moves.”
As they walk by, people see that X in the driveway and dance. Some dance alone, some dance with their kids, some even dance with their dogs. The most entertaining ones may be the couples where one of them starts to dance, and the other says “no way” and just keeps walking.
Some are even bringing music with them. “Some neighbors down the street, their daughter’s still getting picked up and going to day care,” Fujara said. “The day care provider stopped by with the kids and put some music and let them dance in the driveway.”
“I did send an email out to the neighborhood through our listserv, let people know it was there. Hopefully try to encourage people to stop by,” Fujara said. “And it seems to have worked.” His phone dings two to three times a day while he works from home, saying his camera has been activated.
Fujara posts the videos in the Cherokee Neighborhood Facebook page. “Give everyone a chance to see them, and hopefully they’ll smile for a minute.”
He hopes more people decide to do something like this to make their neighbors smile, and feel a little more connected to one another.
