The Brewers' home opener did not go well Monday afternoon. They were drubbed 11-1 by the Kansas City Royals at American Family Field.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said before the game that the Brewers pitching injuries are “scary and daunting.” With Aaron Civale going on the disabled list with a hamstring injury, three-fifths of the projected Brewers starting rotation is hurt (Tobias Myers and Brandon Woodruff are the other ailing starters.

That’s why Elvin Rodriguez got the start on Monday. Predictably, he gave up three runs in the first inning and another in the second.

Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich said before the game that while it’s “not how we wanted to get out of the gate, we’ll be fine. I don’t think anybody’s panicking.” Maybe so, but it’s fair to say the fans are already restless.

This was the Brewers’ first home opener since the death of the legendary Bob Uecker. His radio partner Jeff Levering admitted to me that it would be a hard day. He said he’d “take a lot of deep breaths” to get through it.

Outside the ballpark, fans paid tribute at the Bob Uecker statue. I saw one weeping.

It was that kind of day at the ballpark. Fans feeling the sting of Bob Uecker’s absence and the Brewers’ first 0-4 start since 2015. It was kind of a celebration, but Jeff Levering was right. It was a hard day.
