MILWAUKEE -- The Harley-Davidson (H-D) Museum is holding Sensory Friendly Day for the first time Saturday, in partnership with Autism United of Wisconsin (AUW).
AUW members and their families will receive free admission to the museum from 8 to 10 a.m. April 5. The exhibits will be marked out in a way to make the museum more accommodating for people with sensory sensitivities, such as areas with sound or interactive elements and no-touch zones.
“We are thrilled to partner with the H-D Museum to offer a sensory-friendly experience to our families,” said UAW Executive Director Rechelle Chaffee. “Providing a safe and comfortable environment where individuals on the Autism Spectrum can explore and engage without feeling overwhelmed is incredibly meaningful to our community.”
There will also be a quiet zone with bean bag chairs to provide a break from sensory stimulation. AUW will also provide earmuffs and fidget gadgets.
Additionally, each registered AUW family will receive a $25 gift card for the museum gift shop.
“Partnering with Autism United of Wisconsin allows us to better understand and support the needs of the Autism community, and we hope this is just the beginning of many more sensory-friendly experiences at the museum,” said H-D Museum General Manager Amber Christoper.
The Harley-Davidson Museum plans to offer similar events in the future.
Individuals can sign up to become a UAW member through the organization's website, here.
