MADISON, Wis. — Dane County Regional Airport could soon have international designation.
Dane County Executive Melissa Agard in a press release Friday announced her administration’s plans to would pursue the designation.
Agard said the move will not only expand global connectivity, but it will bolster the economy and tourism in the region.
It comes as the airport reached a milestone number of travelers in 2024, at 2.35 million, the second-highest in the airport’s history.
“With record-breaking travel numbers and growing demand for expanded air service, achieving international designation for Dane County Regional Airport is the logical next step in ensuring our community remains a hub for business, travel, and economic opportunity,” said Agard in the release. “This effort will enhance our ability to attract international visitors, support local businesses, and strengthen Madison’s position on the global stage.”
To become an international airport in the United States, its required to have U.S. Customs & Border Protection facilities on site, which is necessary for international passengers and cargo.
Agard said her office will work with state and federal partners, aviation officials and the business community to secure international status. She said this will “open new doors” for Dane County.
The announcement also comes as the Dane County Regional Airport is in the search for its next airport director. After two decades of work, current Director Kim Jones announced she’ll retire in April.
