MADISON, Wis. — The UW Field House in Madison was rocking as the League One Madison Volleyball team made its first appearance there.

  • Many youth volleyball clubs were in attendance

  • LOVB Madison beat LOVB Salt Lake in five sets

  • LOVB Madison played Sat. Jan. 18 in the Field House, but the rest of their home games will be played in Alliant Energy Center

Fans from all over came to see the highest form of volleyball played.

Tamara Smith and her daughter made the near two hour trip from Dekalb, Illinois.

Tamara said spending this time with her daughter is special.

“I was just telling my daughter it's exhilarating being in a stadium full of all volleyball people like volleyball fans that know what each game means,” said Tamara. “I love the agility, I love the intensity. And I'm just glad it can be here now instead of, you know, other countries that we can actually go to the games now.”

Tamara used to play volleyball in junior college and as a pro in doubles beach volleyball.

She said this is their first time at the Field House and is excited for one thing.

“To be able to kind of be in person instead of just watching it through a screen and, I don't know, just being close, just be close to the action," said Tamara.

Isabelle Smith plays club volleyball. She said she became interested in the sport because her mom.

Isabelle said seeing the top women at their sport play, is awesome.

“I think it's really important to be able to see that kind of skill level,” said Isabelle. “And for younger people like me, to be able to see it and be inspired by it.”

The two cheered along with the thousands of other volleyball fans in attendance.

Tamara said volleyball is important to her and the many girls across the state.

“I just think there's so many different avenues you can go with volleyball,” said Tamara. “So, whether you do sand or indoor, there's different complexities. There's different levels … that kind of level of play, we've only seen through the screen.”
