MILWAUKEE — As health care systems across the state have been dealing with the recent spike in patients suffering from RSV, COVID-19 and influenza, any progress against one virus appears to get wiped out by an uptick in another.

“It seems potentially that RSV has peaked and now the numbers seem to be decreasing very slowly,” Dr. Brad Burmeister, an emergency room physician with Bellin Health, told Spectrum News 1. “The troublesome part is we’re noticing increases in influenza cases, almost double week after week, for the past couple of weeks.”

Despite the ongoing spike in overall patients dealing with respiratory viruses, Burmeister said there are plenty of steps people can take to try and avoid contracting them, or avoid dealing with any complications because of them.

“The best thing people can do is be up-to-date on their vaccines,” Burmeister added. “People sometimes want to delay that influenza vaccine so that they have maximum coverage for when we’re really in the peak of influenza season, but really now is the time to get your influenza vaccine.”
