OSHKOSH, Wis.— Students at one local school enjoyed a day full of color, music and dancing.

And it's all thanks to one of their own classmates.

Mason Mitchell helped lead the effort of organizing his school’s first ever Diversity Day and Fashion Show. The senior said he wanted to make sure all students, regardless of background or heritage, had a voice and were heard.

The Oshkosh West High School student said the goal of the event he planned was to spread love and awareness while celebrating his diverse classmates.

“I wanted to make everyone feel special and I wanted to just spread awareness at Oshkosh West. This is my last year and I wanted to do something good,” Mitchell said.

The day was full of colors, music, dancing and a little bit of chaos for Mitchell who was primarily in charge of making sure the fashion show went off without a hitch.

“We’ve been planning for the last six months,” he said.

Aaron Herm, the assistant principal, said he was proud to see how much the students cared about educating people on their heritage.

“I think as our community and area becomes increasingly diverse, it’s important to celebrate that diversity so that we create an inclusive school where all people feel welcomed,” Herm said.

Tiffani Vang is a senior of Hmong heritage. She performed a culturally themed dance with fellow Hmong students.

Vang said the celebration came at a time when Asian-Americans face a lot of hate. She said she was honored to educate people on her culture.

“I feel like all cultures are important and need to be spoken about,” she said.

School leaders said they hope to hold Diversity Day again in the future.
