MILWAUKEE— Less than two years after the 2020 Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee fizzled out to a virtual event because of the pandemic, the Cream City is back in the political convention mix after becoming one of four finalists to host the Republican National Convention in 2024.

"Being able to highlight all the wonderful assets Milwaukee has to offer really helped play a role in us making it this far," Peggy Williams-Smith, president of VISIT Milwaukee, said.

First confirmed by Politico Friday, the other three finalists are Nashville, Salt Lake City and Pittsburgh.

Williams-Smith said the bid was loosely based on the pitch the city had successfully made a few years ago to land the DNC, and if Milwaukee were to win out this time again, more than $200 million dollars could be on their way to Wisconsin.

"Having any political convention can run anywhere from $180 million to $230 million in economic impact," Williams-Smith said. "I think that's something that would give all of our hospitality partners throughout the city, the region and the state something to look forward to."
