BARABOO, Wis. School, sports, extracurricular activities and everything else that goes into being a teenager can add up. Maggie Cleary sometimes uses nature hikes to get away and reset her mind.

“I just make sure that I know what’s going on each day,” said Cleary. “I prioritize the things that are going on, but I also prioritize time for myself where I can relax and wind down and not be super stressed or worried.”

In school, she's driven to succeed and appears ready for the next level. Her math teacher said Cleary’s figured out a learning style that maximizes her abilities.

“It’s impressive for students especially at that junior-senior year to start to grasp that idea of time management. That’s a lot of times the biggest challenge entering college,” said Damion Beth, Cleary's math teacher. “She’s done a great job as far as learning the skills necessary to be successful outside of the school environment.”

There’s more to Cleary than nature walks and her 3.9 GPA. She loves sports and even played some hockey.

Her softball coach said time on the ice made Cleary strong, and that carried over onto the diamond.

“If you can get 15 - 18 Maggie’s you’d be really happy in your program,” said Dan Lewison, Baraboo's head softball coach. “She does what the coaches ask her to do. She tries extremely hard and works hard at her craft.”

As a sophomore, Cleary joined the tennis team and soon evolved into a leader and MVP.

“Maggie really kind of saved our season her junior year,” said Karll Kruse, Baraboo's head tennis coach. “Our season wasn’t going well. We were just struggling to get out of the box. She took over the number one singles spot and played incredibly. She beat some tough players and gave us renewed hope.”

Of her many community endeavors, volunteering at the Baraboo-area homeless shelter stands out in Cleary’s mind.

“It was really powerful to realize that there are people in my community that need help, and I was able to help them in some way,” said Cleary.

No job was too small at the shelter.

“Things like hanging up curtains or mopping the floors, it was definitely a hands-on type of volunteer experience,” said Cleary.

With all of these talents, she’s still undecided about where to attend school next year. Cleary may focus her studies on political science and math, but she’s still thinking it through.

Whatever her pursuit, Cleary seems up for any challenge. She also knows if college life gets too crazy, to get away for a hike once in a while.
