MILWAUKEE — Ascension Wisconsin is going to require all of its employees to be vaccinated for COVID-19, becoming the first healthcare system in the southeastern Wisconsin region to do so, according to officials.

In a statement, Ascension said that employees must complete the COVID-19 vaccine series no later than Nov. 12, 2021. This applies to employees regardless of whether or not they provide direct patient care. Additionally, both on-site and remote employees will be required to be vaccinated.

The statement said this includes but is not limited to: associates employed by subsidiaries and partners; physicians and advanced practice providers, whether employed or independent; and volunteers and vendors entering Ascension facilities.

Ascension said if an employee cannot get vaccinated due to a medical condition or religious belief, there will be a formal process to request an exemption.

Ascension officials said this decision was made to ensure the safety of patients, visitors, staff and the larger community. The statement also said that the decision is rooted in their dual identities as a Catholic ministry and healthcare provider.

Officials did confirm that tens of thousands of Ascension associates have already received the COVID-19 vaccine.
