JANESVILLE, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) --  A Rock County Orthodontist is the first in Wisconsin to use a new technology to treat his patients during the pandemic.

Dr. Brian Pelsue is piloting Smile Doctors new Dental Monitoring App. His Smile Doctor Dental Clinic started the effort shortly after 'Safer at Home' started.

He says hundreds of his patients used the free service during the pandemic. It is helping him make sure everyone’s treatments can continue — even though some clients can’t always make it to an in-person appointment.

"And we could honestly advance treatment a little bit for some people, we could have them come pick-up some more aligners safely by leaving them outside, pick-up more rubber bands if they needed them, we could draw on the pictures they submitted with the app, showing them where to wear their rubber bands or a spot they should be brushing so it really, really saved us during this pandemic,"  says Dr. Pelsue.

In some cases, the app allows for Pelsue Orthodontics to stretch out appointments. Dr. Pelsue says this feature could come in handy if Rock County sees another wave of COVID-19.

"With this app, certain kind of treatments we maybe able to see someone every 4 to 6 months, especially Invisalign or clear aligner cases," he says.

Dr. Pelsue says he’s also trained plenty of parents during the pandemic on how to fix braces with tweezers and nail clippers.
