MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) --

9:15am MPS PROVIDING MEALS TO STUDENTS

In light of the school closures, MPS says they will be proving meals to the students throughout the closure period.

They will be doing so at a series of distribution locations throughout the greater Milwaukee area.

Those meals will be available Monday through Friday 11 am to 1 pm.

The distribution centers will also provide enrichment resources and additional materials for students both in hard copy and online.

More information will be available in the future from the district.

7:15 pm MILWAUKEE, KENOSHA, RACINE SCHOOLS CLOSING MONDAY

Milwaukee Public Schools, Kenosha Unified and Racine Unified confirmed Friday that they're planning to close Monday, March 16th after Governor Tony Evers announced Friday that schools statewide must shutdown by next Wednesday to protect against the spread of the coronavirus.

Kenosha Unified and Racine Unified are currently planning to remain closed from Monday, March 16th through April 6th.

Milwaukee Public Schools will stay closed until Tuesday, April 14th, after Spring Break wraps up.

All three districts are in the midst of planning out what the temporary closures will look like for both their students and staff members, with MPS posting to the district's website that information "regarding lunch programs, student support services and staffing requirements will be shared with each individual school district’s families and staff in the very near future."

"My message would be as I tell children every single day-- read. Read as much as you can," MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith Posley advised students district-wide on Friday night. "Read. Read. Read. Find every single book you can get your hands on and read.

The other piece is writing. We have an additional plan in this district, version 2.0, where we have gone back to the basics-- math, reading and writing. I talked about reading and the other piece is writing, finding things to write about. That is something that we're going to be looking at through the instructional materials-- encouraging people to write and look at different topics they're going to write on."
