Taurean Small is a Chicago native and a Northern Illinois University graduate. Taurean started his political reporting career in 2015 as a multimedia journalist for ABC 57 News in South Bend, Indiana. He reported on governmental affairs and education for three years before covering Indiana's U.S. Senate race during the 2018 midterms. Today, Taurean is a Washington Correspondent with the Spectrum News D.C Bureau team.
Taurean views journalism as a utility. Throughout his career, his goal has always been to empower people through conversations and arm them with the knowledge to make change. To illustrate, Taurean’s coverage of one Indiana school's pilot program, which focused on restorative justice, brought awareness to the now wide-spread education practices that integrate counseling into the classroom in order to avoid disproportionate discipline. A year later, the entire school corporation rolled out similar programs throughout the district.
On most days, you can catch Taurean chasing stories through the long halls on Capitol Hill with his reporting gear in one hand, and Google Maps in the other. When he's not reporting on the latest political news, you can find him spending time with his friends, exploring the various bars and restaurants D.C. has to offer.
