LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rep. Mary Lou Marzian, a 28-year incumbent in the Kentucky House of Representatives, announced Monday that she has withdrawn from her re-election campaign.

What You Need To Know

  • Rep. Mary Lou Marzian is no longer running for re-election

  • The 28-year incumbent withdrew from the May primaries on Monday

  • She cited recent GOP redistricting, blasting it as "misogynistic" gerrymandering

  • Marzian and three other Democratic women in Jefferson County were forced to run against one another in the new districts

Marzian held a press event Monday, joined by other Democratic women representing parts of Jefferson County, to share the news and blast the recent GOP redistricting process that saw her pitted against fellow female incumbent Rep. Josie Raymond.

"I am not going to play their sadistic and misogynistic game of pitting Democratic women against each other," Marzian said.

Parts of House District 34, held by Marzian for nearly three decades, merged with parts of Raymond's district 31 during this year's redistricting process. Marzian and a chorus of other Democrats have blasted the Republicans' process as gerrymandering.

On Jan. 21, lawmakers overrode Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto of two redistricting maps. The Kentucky Democratic Party and others sued claiming Republicans split too many counties and that the maps are partisan.

Lawmakers redraw the legislative districts every 10 years following the U.S. Census.

The new maps meant four sets of incumbents, evenly split among Republican and Democratic lawmakers, would have to run against one another. Reps. Lisa Willner and McKenzie Cantrell also had their districts (35 and 38) merged. Cantrell has also withdrawn from the May primaries.
