COLUMBUS, Ohio — Usually you hear of sibling rivalries when it comes to sports, but there’s a brother and sister duo that’s coming together to train and compete on one of the most notorious obstacle courses.

What You Need To Know

  • Sydney and Dylan Yee are students at Olentangy Liberty High School

  • They have been "ninja" training for nearly a decade

  • They'll be in an American Ninja Warrior episode that hasn't been released yet

Sydney and Dylan Yee are siblings who are about to become TV stars on the popular reality show, American Ninja Warrior.

“We were just on the couch watching TV and my parents put on American Ninja Warrior because it’s a show that we all love to watch and after watching that for a while, me and my brother started climbing on things all around the house to the point where my mom was like, ‘We should probably get them in the gym,’” said Sydney Yee, a junior at Olentangy Liberty High School.

“I think I was 7 when I started training so we’ve been training for eight years now,” said Dylan Yee, sophomore at Olentangy Liberty High School.

The 15- and 16-year-old brother and sister duo are students at Olentangy Liberty High School, but when they’re not in the classroom, you can usually find them in the gym “ninja training,” and that training is far from easy.

“It’s really tough on our bodies. We go through a lot of mental, physical strain and just like thinking through the course and running through the course are two completely different things,” Dylan Yee said.

When they train, the siblings said there are different stations, ranging from calisthenics to different ninja obstacles.

Dylan said his favorite obstacle is laches, which is when you throw your body from bar to bar.

And Sydney loves “wing nuts” where she swings from the obstacle course and uses her body weight to rock back and forth and throw herself to the next, and the siblings have a special bond.

“We’re definitely closer than a lot of other brother/sister duos and we really help push each other so much,” Dylan Yee said.

“Since we’re together so much of the week, because we’re training for ninja and stuff, I get to really know him. He gets to really know me and we can push each other while we’re training,” Sydney Yee said.

Their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. Their trainer, Jenn Sanders, said they always bring the energy.

“They’re Irish twins so they’re super close in age, and it kind of brings a competitive love between them so they’re always trying to push each other in a positive way at practice,” said Jenn Sanders, Ninja trainer at Movement Lab Ohio.

The two already recorded their episode and are awaiting an air date.

On the show, the contestants have “ninja nicknames.” Sydneys is the “Sly Ninja”.

“Because it’s my initials, but I also like to say it’s because I’m sly and smooth on courses,” Sydney Yee said.

And Dylans is “the Happy Ninja”.

“Because a bunch of people at my ninja gym and outside of ninja have always seen me really smiling and happy and really enjoying the things that I do,” Dylan Yee said.

The siblings said to stay tuned to when their episode will air.

“A bunch of Liberty kids think it’s really cool that I do this and are really excited to see when the episode comes out,” Dylan Yee said.

They’re not the only athletes from Olentangy Liberty who are making headlines.

The Patriots Football team is playing for a regional championship this week.
