COLUMBIA, S.C. - Monday marks the start of the 5th Annual PrEP week in South Carolina. The state department of public health will be hosting free webinars as well as free HIV testing throughout the state, including making college visits.

 

According to DPH, PrEP has evolved to a medicine which can be used as a pill or injectable to limit the transmission of the HIV among those people who have been exposed to the virus.

The Department of Public Health and the AIDS Education & Training Center will host a PrEP Symposium on Friday, Sept. 27 from 11:00 -3:00 p.m. The topics will be

  • Integrating PrEP Screening with the Well Woman Visit
  • Selecting the Right PrEP Medication
  • HIV PrEP & STI PrEP
  • Increasing PrEP Use for People who use Injection Drugs

“This is a great opportunity to bring more attention to PrEP’s key role in the fight against the spread of HIV,” said Tia Robinson, DPH’s PrEP program manager. “When taken consistently as recommended, PrEP is extremely effective in preventing infection.
