CINCINNATI — Eden Park will expand its Cincinnati Children's operation after the hospital system acquired a medical building adjacent to it.

The building contains three operating rooms which will help meet the increasing need for pediatric surgical procedures. The building was purchased for $8.7 million and previously was a surgery site for adults, so minor renovations will be made to accommodate pediatric patients.

It is expected to open later this year and is located across across Eden Park Drive from the Baldwin Building and across Gilbert Avenue from the steps that lead to the Cincinnati Art Museum atop Mount Adams.

Eden Park is located at 2001 Gilbert Ave. in Walnut Hills. The hospital is expecting to be scheduling surgical procedures for the second half of 2024, improving access for patients who undergo elective procedures that don't require hospitalizations such as plastic, urology, general, ear, nose & throat procedures and some orthopedic.

Cincinnati Children's sees more than 1.6 million patients each year, with approximately 38,000 surgical procedures. In 2023, the number of surgeries performed increased by 8%.

“We are seeing an increase in the number of pediatric patients in our region who are in need of surgical care,” said Dr. Daniel von Allmen, surgeon in chief and senior vice president for Surgical Services in a news release. “In addition, more families from outside our region are traveling here for care since Cincinnati Children’s was recognized as the nation’s No. 1 pediatric health system by U.S News & World Report in its 2023-24 ranking of Best Children’s Hospitals.”

Eden Park is part of the health system plan to meet the rising operation demand. Cincinnati Children's has 40 operating or procedure rooms, including more the two dozen at its main campus in Avondale and more than a half-dozen ORs at its Liberty Township campus in Butler County.

Cincinnati Children's Eastgate, currently under construction in Clermont County, will include four operating rooms for outpatient surgery.

“We are committed to providing excellent service and access to our world-class care in the most medically appropriate site — based on safety and convenience for the child and their family,” von Allmen said.
