Prior to the United Auto Workers strike, which began over a week ago, employees in other industries across the country have chosen to go on strike in an effort to obtain better wages and working conditions.

What You Need To Know

  • The UAW strike is just one of the latest in a string of employee walkouts in 2023

  • There were 120,600 workers involved in major work stoppages that began in 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

  • Based on a Cornell University report, nearly 70% of Americans support labor unions and union activity

In Ohio, the Stellantis parts distribution center in Streetsboro and the GM Cincinnati Parts Distribution Center in Westchester are among 38 sites nationwide that are now part of the UAW targeted walkout.

"I think if the UAW is successful as the Teamsters were in negotiating a large wage increase, they would join other companies such as those in the airline industry, that succeeded in ramping up their wages considerably," said Dr. Marick Masters, a professor with the Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University, in an interview with Spectrum News.

Masters added, "And workers would look at that as an opportunity to say unions can provide higher wages and they can provide more secure benefits."
